    Science-fiction novel

"I know what time is; but when they ask me, I don't know how to explain it ..." (St. Augustine)

Have you ever had a Rubik's cube in your hands? The discovery of gravitational waves and the ineffable relevance of its scientific significance, have triggered in my mind a whirlwind of ideas which needed fine-tuning and a proper alignment. To harmonize ideas and transform them into concepts, is just like playing with the Rubik's cube. Each idea becomes a color that can be aligned. Each color can take on a configuration: the one which is much more fulfilling (that is the most difficult) is the completion, on the cube, of faces of a single color. Anyone who loves to write knows that coloring anonymous blank pages, until the completion of his work, has an extremely satisfying outcome.

Escape from the relative present (Fuga dal presente relativo)

It is September 14, 2015: while the scientific world rejoices at the striking discovery, Giovanni, immersed in his professional activity, cannot remotely imagine that something will completely turn his life upside down. On that day the interferometers LIGO and VIRGO carried out the first survey of gravitational waves, whose existence was hypothesized by Albert Einstein, just one century before: he theorized that they represented “deformations of the space/time curvature”. The casual interweaving of some paradoxical dynamics, just as gravitational waves lap our planet, involve the unsuspecting Giovanni, producing an inexplicable psychophysical phenomenon that throws him into despair. The meeting with Momy, professor of physics, brings Giovanni back to hope that his life can return to normal, despite the doubt that another Giovanni exists elsewhere. The woman's advice is precious and he treasures it. Together they begin a particular investigation, looking both at the reality of the moment and to the notions of gravitational physics and of quantum mechanics. The twists are not lacking, so that also Momy will have to deal with a sort of time loop capable of confusing its existence between a “before” and an “after”.

Who and what inspired the story told?

On Thursday 18 February 2016, at the Colosseum theater in Turin, I participated in one of the meetings of the "Thursdays of Science" which dealt with the theme: "On the wave of gravitational waves - From Einstein's prediction to the birth of a new astronomy". A friend (physics teacher) invited me to follow that appointment. Today I can say that it was really worth it. The confirmation of the existence of gravitational waves and their detection was admirably illustrated by two well-known Italian physicists: Vincenzo Barone and Andrea Chincarini. I was so impressed and fascinated by the subject that I had a first "input": I would have written an engaging story capable of making that discovery known even to people with cultural interests far from such things. It will seem incredible but my idea was completely realized in June of that same year. Always my friend physics teacher, aware of how fascinated I was by the topic "discovery of gravitational waves", informed me of an upcoming appointment not to be missed: Kip Thorne would give a lectio magistralis in the main hall of the Cavallerizza Reale of the 'University of Turin. The great American theoretical physicist, friend of the late and brilliant Stephen Hawking, was the author and curator of the scientific part of the film "Interstellar" (directed by Christopher Nolan), therefore the subject of the Turin lectio had "The science of Interstellar" as its subject. The fact is that after that meeting I would no longer have any doubts about the plot in which I would have moved the protagonists of "Escape from the relative present" which, after a couple of revisions, I completed in February 2019.
American theoretical physicist specializing in gravitation physics and astrophysics and one of the leading experts in general relativity. On 3 October 2017 he received the Nobel Prize in physics, together with Rainer Weiss and Barry Barish, for the discovery of gravitational waves.

Capitolo 9

Faccio bene a tagliarla col coltello?
Ah! A proposito di cena: chiedo scusa; come cuoca di solito rendo meglio…» Continua
